Mr. Charles Fitzpatrick, the Secretary to the present Lord
Lieutenant of Ireland, one day meeting with his [Gibbon's]
writings at the house of Mr. Fox, wrote on the blank leaf
the following lines extempore.
  King George in a fright,
  Lest Gibbon should write
  The story of Britain's disgrace,
  Thought no means more sure
  His pen to procure,
Than to give the historian a place.
